Why is my policy being canceled?

Here are a few common reasons why your insurance policy might be canceled:

  • Non Payment of Premiums: Failure to pay premiums on time, even after a grace period, can lead to cancellation.
  • Underwriting: If the insurer’s underwriting department discovers that a situation doesn’t meet the criteria for coverage after a policy is issued (e.g., failing to meet health requirements for life insurance), they may cancel the policy.
  • Fraud or Misrepresentation: Providing false information or failing to disclose key facts when applying for your insurance can result in cancellation.
  • Violation of Policy Terms: Breaking policy rules (e.g., letting an excluded driver use your car) can lead to a cancellation of your policy and denial of a claim.

A “non-renewal” is when an insurance company decides not to continue coverage for a policyholder at the end of the policy term. Essentially, the insurer opts not to renew the policy, meaning the policyholder will need to find a new insurer if they want to maintain coverage.

Your insurance policy could be non-renewed for several reasons:

  • Frequent Claims: Too many claims or high-risk claims may lead to non-renewal.
  • Late Payments: Missed or late payments can trigger non-renewal.
  • Increased Risk: Changes in your circumstances (e.g. home or car condition) may raise risk for the insurer.
  • Non-Compliance: Failing to meet policy requirements can result in non-renewal.
  • Market Changes: Insurers may stop offering certain types of coverage or leave your area.
  • Fraud Suspicions: If fraud is suspected, they may not renew.
  • Property Age/Condition: Older or poorly maintained properties may be too risky to insure.

There are several reasons that your premium may increase as your policy approaches renewal. These reasons include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Market & Regulatory Changes: Insurers may raise rates due to market conditions or state-approved rate hikes.
  • Claims History: Your recent claims, especially having multiple or expensive ones, can raise your premium for the upcoming renewal period.
  • Risk Changes: If you have life changes, such as moving, getting a new car, or health/driving record updates, this can affect your rate.
  • Rising Costs: Impact from rising costs in the economy can contribute to rate changes. This includes inflation, higher repair or medical costs, and industry-wide price increases.
  • Policy Adjustments: Increasing coverage limits or lowering deductibles can lead to a higher premium.
Credit Score: If your credit score changes, a lower score can result in higher premiums in some states.
  • Loss of Discounts: If you receive a discount when starting your policy, your premium may increase the next year if you no longer qualify. This could be a discount from bundling policies or a safe driving discount.
  • Insurer’s Rate Adjustment: Your insurer may raise rates across the board due to higher claims or business changes.
